City of Cork Steam Packet Co Ltd and B&I Line
Archival History:
The main body of Cork Steam Packet Co Ltd was transferred from B&I Offices, Penrose Quay, Cork, in February 1984, by Mr Foley, Manager. Additional material was acquired on 22 January 2007 from P&O Archives c/o Stephen Rabson, P&O Line Archivist and Historian. This deposit included U370/S/001, the 1836 articles of agreement of the Cork Steam Packet Company. U370/D/020 (City of Cork Steam Ship Company receipts, 1858-69) were deposited separately, and originally given the reference code U186. Item U370/D/019, (Inisfallen stationery with letterhead) was acquired in February 2013 from Liverpool Maritime Museum, having been donated by a private donor in the UK. In 2014, the large ships’ drawings were professionally conserved, several damaged volumes were rebound, and other cleaning and reprographic work was carried out with the assistance of grant funding from the H eritage Council’s Heritage Management Grant Scheme.
Biographical/Administrative History:
The City of Cork Steam Packet Co Ltd had its origins in the St George Steam Packet Company, formed by businessmen from Cork, Dublin, and Liverpool in 1821, providing steam services between Irish and UK ports. From the late 1820s, direct services ran between Cork and Liverpool and Bristol. The Company came to trade with leading European ports, in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Russia. In 1838 the Company's vessel the Sirius, under Captain Roberts, became the first steamer to cross the Atlantic, arriving in New York from Cork on 22 April.
The Company was reorganised in 1843 and renamed the City of Cork Steam Ship Company, under the direction of Ebenezer Pike, all its first directors being Corkmen*. Vessels including the Cormorant

and Dodo transported troops to the Crimean War [U370/G/044-045]. In 1871, in light of high volumes of trade, it was decided to split the company in two. The City of Cork Steam Packet Co Ltd was set up to handle 'coastal' trade with Britain, while the original company was incorporated in 1872 as the Cork Steam Ship Company Ltd, retaining foreign routes. It lost many vessels during World War I, and was wound down in the 1920s, the new British & Continental Steamship Company of Liverpool taking over its flag and other assets. At the Cork Steam Ship Company's final meeting on 25 March 1927 it was resolved 'that the liquidator be empowered to destroy the books and records of the Company after three months from the date of the meeting' [Smyth, p197]. The City of Cork Steam Packet Co Ltd was administered from the Company's offices at Penrose Quay, Cork, initially trading regularly with Liverpool, Milford, and London. In the 1880s a dispute with cattle dealers caused much disruption [U370/A/006]. In 1883 Ebenezer Pike was succeeded as chairman and managing director by his son Joseph Pike. The Company participated in popular 'grand tours' of picturesque west Cork and Kerry, naming several vessels after locations on the tour itinerary. Excursion and 'daylight' cruise were particularly popular in the 1930s [U370/D/002]. A new port at Fishguard, opened by the Great Western Railway Company in 1906, came to replace the Milford route [U370/D/001]. The Company experienced labour troubles in 1908-09, including a strike organised by James Larkin, but at the eve of World War I was trading very successfully. Routes operated from Cork to Fishguard, Liverpool, Bristol, Plymouth (and Southampton and London), and Newport-Cardiff (this last was coal and cargo only, the others included passenger services). A Cork-Le Harve service was later added. The War, however, took a heavy toll, and in 1918 the Company was bought out by Coast Lines Limited, through the British & Irish Steam Packet Company (acquired a year earlier). RW Sinnott was appointed manager, and the Company continued to trade under its own name. In 1936 it was brought under the management of the British & Irish Steam Packet Company (1936), under the overall control of Coast Lines [U370/B/056]. Throughout its history the Company suffered losses of vessels and lives at sea, including the loss of the Sirius in Ballycotton Bay in 1847. Losses in World War I included the Inniscarra, the Lismore, and the Ardmore [U370/C/029]. The sinking of the Lismore (II) in 1924 was later found by the Irish Free State's first investigation into a maritime disaster to have been caused by the movement of cattle [U370/C/025]. Losses in World War II included the Ardmore (II) in 1940, proven in 1998 to have been caused by a mine [U370/C/024]. Several new ships were built after the war, reusing former names such as Innisfallen and Glengariff. The latter's final voyage on 7 Dec 1963 marked the end of the Cork-Liverpool service [U370/D/018]. In 1965 the Irish government took over the British and Irish Steam Packet Co Ltd, together with its subsidiary City of Cork Steam Packet Company. Coast Lines Ltd were taken over by the P&O Line (formerly Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company) in 1971. *In 1836 a company called the Cork Steam Packet Company was set up as a partnership headed by Thomas Somerville Reeves, with 222 subscribing members [U370/S/001]. This company may have failed to prosper and ceased operations; or, it may have been absorbed by the new City of Cork Steam Ship Company created in 1843. Kennedy and Smyth make no reference to the 1836 company.

CONTENT AND STRUCTURE Scope and Content:
The surviving records of the City of Cork Steam Packet Company Limited provide a wealth of information on the Company's management, ownership, administration, operations, staff, and vessels, particularly for the period from its creation in 1871 to its takeover in 1918, and through its existence as part of the British & Irish Steam Packet Company and the Coast Lines group of companies up to 1965. A few records of its predecessor, the City of Cork Steam Ship Company (1843- 71) also occur in the collection. These include an important set of Company letters to ships' captains [U370/F/247], some files on the Company's London and other agencies [U370/C/035] and receipts for shipment of goods on vessels including the Cormorant and the Halcyon [U370/D/020]. Also present are photographs of two vessels from that time, the Cormorant (built 1853) and the Dodo (built 1855) [U370/H/044-045]. Appendix 1 to the descriptive list outlines pre-1871 records, while Appendix 2 is a calendar of the letters to ships’ captains 1844 – 1871 in U370/F/247. These earlier records have not been separated from later Company records, but rather have been placed with similar material within relevant series, apart from one 1836 item, given a distinct series, U370/S. U370/A 'Corporate Governance' consists of records of the overall management of the Company, including articles of association from its founding, minutes and reports of its directors, and minutes, reports, and accounts from meetings of members (shareholders). This system of governing the Company was not continued after 1918, when instead the new owners placed a managing director in charge. U370/B 'Shares and Investments' documents ownership of share in the Company from 1871 to 1918, and changes in ownership, including its takeover in 1918. Files relating to shares and investments also document later share transfers, dividends, share calls, and investments. U370/C 'Administrative Files' relate primarily to the period as part of British & Irish Steam Packet Company and the Coast Lines Group, reflecting the changed recordkeeping resulting from new management structures. Within this series are files on property, financial matters, and operational issues, illustrating a wide range of Company activities, particularly in the 1920s-30s. Of particular importance are files of trade returns from the 1960s, and files relating to vessels, including files on war loss during the First and Second World Wars [U370/C/027-029]. U370/D 'Promotions and Company History' documents special promotional cruises, Company promotional literature and advertising, and notes and cuttings on Company history, largely assembled for promotional and commemorative purposes, which add much colour to the collection. U370/E 'Other Organisations' is a small but key series containing minutes and files of dealings with the Ireland and England Traffic Conference, the Great Western Railway Company, and Cork Harbour Commissioners, on the movement of goods between Britain and Ireland, c1860s to 1930s.

U370/F 'Volumes' is the largest series, divided into four main groupings: Financial Accounting; Operational Accounting; Wages; and Other. Items include journals, ledgers, cash books, and customs records; movement of goods, claims and rebates, and customer accounts; salary and wages books; and other volumes including correspondence, property rentals, and minor financial and operational records. Volumes in this series have been grouped together as they document Company day-to-day business, and accounting for it, in both financial and formal records of activity and transactions. U370/G 'Printed Matter' includes printed rates for the through traffic of goods through various Irish and UK ports and railway stations, and printed reports, journals, copies of legislation, and other matter, retained by the Company for reference use. U370/H 'Drawings and Photographs' is a valuable series of engineering drawings of many vessels, c1890s-1920s, and a set of 'ships' particulars' with small plans, c1950-51, all illustrating the capacities of Company vessels. Some architectural plans of Company premises in Cork, c1900s, are also included here. There is also a file of drawings regarding alterations to the vessel Glengarriff, c1900-1918. Two photographs, of the Dodo and Cormorant, mentioned above, end this series. The series adds a visual and technical dimension which enhances the collection. U370/S is a special series containing a single item, the articles of agreement and copartnership for the Cork Steam Packet Company, founded in 1836, but not clearly connected to the present Company and its successors. Further information on each series may be found in series level 'Scope and Content' sections. Within series, related and similar records have been grouped together. However these have not been described as sub-series, to allow flexibility and avoid creating an excess of sub-series. Throughout the descriptive list, the City of Cork Steam Packet Company is described as 'the Company'. The British & Irish Steam Packet Company is usually described as 'B&I'. The collection documents one of the most important companies in Cork's commercial and maritime history, from its origins and development into a successful independent company, to its response to the challenges of war, takeover, and changing commercial circumstances. Its staff, officers, shareholders, and directors are well documented, adding to its value as a family and social history resource. The technical drawings, promotional material, and newscuttings present add visual and contextual perspective to the collection, allowing a rounded view of the Company's history, and the possibility of pursuing various avenues of research. The Company minutes and volumes recording financial and operational transactions, however, form the core of the collection.

Corporate Governance
Level: series Extent: 19 items Scope and Content:
Records relating to the corporate governance of the Company, including memoranda and articles of association, minutes of meetings of directors, annual general meetings of shareholders, and related reports and accounts prepared for consideration at such meetings. Also present is a register of its directors and managers. These records in general, and the minutes in particular, provide much detail on the performance of the Company, its dealings with shareholders, and its financial and public position and standing. They are a key resource for study of the evolution of the Company. *See also U370/S below, articles of the 1836 Cork Steam Packet Company. U370/A/001-003 are memoranda and articles of association setting out the membership and share capital of the Company, on its creation in 1871-72, and its incorporation in 1936 into the British and Irish Steam Packet Company, a subsidiary of Coast Lines Ltd. U370/A/004-010 are directors' minutes. Meetings of directors occurred weekly in the board room at company offices. Minutes list the directors present, including the chair, and give a brief summary of business transacted. This includes consideration of cheques, correspondence, applications, and share transfers, and orders and decisions made in respect of these matters. U370/A/011-013 are minutes of annual general meetings of Company shareholders, 1871 - 1918. Minutes record the date and venue of meeting, directors present, shareholders present, and minutes of proceedings. Statements or addresses by the chairman (later known as directors’ reports) regarding the company’s performance that year precede annual meetings. The auditor’s report is adopted. Much of the discussion occurring is recorded verbatim, or summarised in detail. All resolutions passed or considered are recorded. Ordinary or General (annual) meetings are generally held in August, with half-yearly meetings occurring in January or February. U370/A/014 contains directors' reports and annual accounts 1872 – 1882, 1885, 1901, and 1918. These were prepared for annual general meetings. U370/A/015 is a Coast Lines report for 1955. U370/A/016 contains annual accounts for 1951 and 1952, also evidently prepared for AGMs. U370/A/017 contains profit and loss accounts, apparently prepared for the same purpose, for the years 1873, 1878, 1880, 1883, and 1884. See also accounting records elsewhere in the collection, eg, series U370/C and U370/F
U370/A/018 consists of later trading and profit and loss account statements (1924-29, and 1932).
U370/A/019 is a register of directors and managers, mainly for 1903-07, recording key information on the people responsible for the government of the Company.

Present are registers of members, recording names and details of owners of shares; ledgers, transfer deeds, and other records tracing the movement and transfer of shares, including probate registers documenting changes arising from the deaths of shareholders; and volumes and files relating to the administration of share ownership, dividends, and Company investments. The various records have been grouped together in virtual sub-series below. See 'Scope and Content' of each item, particularly the first in each group for further information. These records, particularly the registers, document the Company's share position and record key information on shareholders, revealing the range of people holding shares, from merchants, ships' agents, and colonels, to clergymen, gentlemen, and widows. When the aggregate of shares totals 20,000 (worth £200,000), the register is stamped and signed as 'sealed' by the chairman. The paper stamp used shows the arms of the company, based on Cork's civic arms, dated 1871.
