Inserted into the minutes for 15 Feb 1881 is a printed proposal to shareholders, to reduce capital by £1 Stg, owing to a weak financial position and the overvaluation of tonnage of steamers based on current market value. The subsequent lengthy discussion is recorded verbatim. The meeting of 16 Aug 1881 heard a detailed address from the chairman explaining the sharp fall in profits for that year, referring to depression of numbers in all branches of traffic (passenger, merchandize, cattle) [p231ff]. Minutes for 22 Aug 1882 are commenced in this volume, but are given in full in the next volume. Also present: Envelope of items formerly in General Meeting Book (minute book), Sep 1871 – Aug 1882. Items include the following: The Irish Banker, 1 Feb 1881; lists of proxies in favour of board members [undated]; Company Prospectus 1871; Report of the Directors and Statement of Accounts, 1881; Directors’ Attendanc e, 1879-80, 1880-81; two transcript of minutes of single meetings [undated]; bundle of letters giving notice of meetings, from Thomas Winder, Company Secretary, and from Directors [some printed, some ms]; two typescript copies of an Act ‘to raise a fund f or defraying the charges of commercial improvements within the City and Port of Cork in Ireland, 14/7/1814’. Small bundle of letters and notes including a letter dated 11 Jan 1875 regarding the Packet Office roof; some notes regarding annuity payable to Margaret Knight, widow, under her marriage settlement, in respect of Robinson’s Yard (1873); two copies of a standard letter from the Company Secretary, 31 Dec 1878, inviting [a director] to an informal meeting with shareholders to take place
