A sticker on the cover reads ‘British & Irish Steam Packet Co Ltd (Incorporating City of Cork Steam Packet Co Ltd), Penrose Quay, Cork’. Pages are headed Quay Wages (Daily Men), and note the date. Fields record the worker’s name, time worked, and wages. Fields for insurance and deductions in the present volume are usually blank, but later volumes include completed tax fields and an ‘Address’ field used to record employee numbers. Added to most sets of entries is the name of the ship or ships the men were engaged to load or unload, and some notes occur regarding cargo and weight of cargo, and other matters. Entries and totals for each day are signed off or initialled by a company official.
