James Edwin Pimm JP, 1829 – 86, born into a Quaker family, was a timber merchant who owned a fleet of ships in the North American timber trade. Safety at sea depends on many factors and crew size was delineated for this barque in an 1877 Voyage Agreement: ‘The crew will consist of seventeen hands all told all above that number must be considered as extra’ ( Appendix 6: Economics and Safety). Captain Arthur Herbert documented his birthplace as Cork on his Mate’s papers but indicated Waterville Kerry on his Master Mariner Competency papers, 28 Dec 1857. Mate Benjamin Reynolds was a younger brother of Captain Nicholas Reynolds (b.1822, Cork), who was a son-in-law of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty). Benjamin would earn his Master Certificate in 1861 and marry Mary Catherine Walsh, granddaughter of Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1794,
