19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

1882 Abraham Sutton b.1867 (Cork)

Fate of ship:

Wrecked 21 Feb 1885 near Tramore with a cargo of coal. The crew of five survived. Captain John Reynolds was a brother of Captain Nicholas Reynolds (b.1822, Cork) who was a son-in-law of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty). Deaths at Sea report indicates his death 7 Aug 1878 aged 40 years (inconsistent dates) on the Camilla (Reg: 17063). Calendar of Wills and Administrations for 1878 indicates his occupation, relationship to Nicholas Reynolds and death at Newport, Wales on 13 Aug 1878. Cause of death not stated. Captain Robert Sutton, brother of Abraham George Sutton (b.1842), husband of Hannah Sutton and father of apprentice (future Captain) Abraham Sutton (b.1867, Cork). Apprentice (future Captain) Abraham Sutton was also the grandson of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty) who owned Camilla with his son, Abraham G Sutton (b.1842, noted above). Captain Robert G Sutton’s wife, Hannah of River View, Summerhill, became an owner in 1882. Multiple family members likely had shares in this ship. Apprentice (future Captain) Jeremiah Collins was a son of Captain Patrick Collins (b.1830, Clonakilty) and Catherine Galvin. His parents reputedly drowned at sea off the coast of Australia, leaving him to be raised by his grandfather, Daniel Joseph Galvin, future Mayor of Cork 1882 – 4. However, a rchival and newspaper evidence indicates Patrick’s death in Milford Harbour in 1861 (see Wave ). Communication with the Galvin family of Cork indicated that it was Daniel Galvin’s sister, Catherine, who had married Captain Patrick Collins (b.1830, Clonakilty) and that they had drowned at sea. Mayor Daniel Galvin was Jeremiah Collin’s uncle and Abraham George Sutton (b.1842), the shipowner, was the godfather to Mayor Daniel Galvin’s son, Barry Cornelius Gal vin (Cork solicitor of the South Mall, Cork), who was named after his grandparents Cornelius Galvin and Barry McMullen (builder of Mary St., Cork). *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; UK Nat Arch BT124; Calendar of Wills and Administrations; Sutton Family History; Collins and Galvin Family Histories; Anderson, Sailing Ships of Ireland ; Bourke, Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast.
