Master:
1849 – 62 Thomas Holman b.1810 (Bideford) 1863 – 70 John Cadigan b.1816 (Passage West) 1870 Peter Gibbons b.1835 (Dungarvan)*
Fate of ship:
The Dungarvan owned Annette was nearing Youghal on 17 December 1905. She was carrying a cargo of coal. The severity of the storm was such that the lifeboat was considerably damaged in the rescue attempt. Two of the crew lost their lives, namely, Captain Maurice Kirby of Dungarvan and Jack Smith of Youghal (Irish & Kelly). This ship undertook foreign and coastal trade as recorded by Captain Holman. This schooner (Reg: 13985) remained largely a Cork coaster until purchased by Peter Gibbons of Dungarvan and moved to the Port of Waterford c.1870. Captain Peter Gibbons was doubtless related to Captain John Gibbons (b.1823, Dungarvan), who married Catherine, the daughter of Captain Thomas Sutton (b.1897/98, Clonakilty). Catherine Gibbons died several months later and is buried with her grandparents in Lislee Cemetery, Clonakilty. Captain John Cadigan would have been the Captain J Caddigan in Lloyd’s. *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton Family History; Irish & Kelly, Two centuries of tall ships in Waterford.
