19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Deaves and Sarah Harvey and they went into a business in 1822: ‘which concentrated on timber imports from the Baltic and Canada, and by return emigrant traffic from Cork City to Canada. They bought and sold ships. They had investments in the St George Steam Packet Co. and other shipping companies. In 1848 these Deaves brothers went bankrupt’ (O’Riordan). The brothers were quite young when they died. Thomas was just 51 years, Reuben 59 years. Other members of the family were merchant mariners (see Barbadoes , Pomona and Thomas Hanford). Apprentice William Shea would earn his Master Certificate in 1859. #UK Nat Arch BT120 and 112; UK M&M; Lloyd’ s; O’Riordan, Portraiture of Cork Harbour Commissioners .
