19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Additional information:

The Landers, like the McDaniels and Dawsons, were prominent Kinsale Shipowners in the mid nineteenth century. The Kinsale Leonards were both merchant mariners and shipowners. Captain J Leonard’s service in Lloyd’s was not backed up by UK M&M records as he indicated service on the Kinsale-owned Alarm and Atlantic at that time. However, both could be correct with Captain John Leonard providing some services on brief coastal trade voyages out of Kinsale. Captain Stephen Manning previously master of Beaver of Cork, was lost with the other 1867 crew members including Mate Timothy Allen who was mate on Sutton’s Girl I Love in 1864 and Apprentice Daniel Donovan who was on his first voyage. *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Bourke, Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast ; New Brunswick Courier.

Fate of ship:

Driven ashore at Bideford, Devon, 31 January 1836. Her crew were rescued. She was on a voyage from Cork to Newport (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). She apparently survived the event and returned to service. Mate Emanuel Murray indicated that this ship was involved in coasting trade. Captain William Preston White 1771 – 1859 was likely to have been the owner. He was a Cork merchant, Trustee of the Cork Ship- Owner’s Society and the first Cork Harbour Master. Appointed in August 1820, he would hold that position until Captain Thomas Cooper Clarke took over in 1854 (O’Riordan) (see also Try Again ). Deputy Harbour Masters were located at Cove, Passage West and Ballinacurra; these positions were consolidated into one in 1842 at Cove/Queenstown.
