Number 7 SAMPLE LESSON PLANS Transition Year The Innisfallen
Learning Objective: Building the students own personal history into the story. This can apply to any topic covered in these resource packs. See especially Susanne Day Resource Pack for optional Transition Year Projects. Part 1 will take at least three class periods but five is more realistic if it is to be presented as an exhibition. Part 2 will take at least three class periods but five is more realistic if it is to be presented as an exhibition. Instructions: Part 1: Discuss the students own history of emigration/migration. This especially applies to students who are not native to Cork, (The Peoples Republic of). ask them If a student has migrated here to tell their own story [Scaffolding: Where from, Describe home place, Google map screenshot of home place, Describe in detail the journey to Ireland, , Language, Food, Housing, Religion, Culture, Music, Ask each student to find out where their uncles and aunts were born and where they are living now Problems What nationality do they think they are?) Ask each student to find out where their grandparents, grand uncles and aunts were born and where they are living now. On screen using a blank world country map record each individual as the results come in use a different colour for each generation. Ask the students if there are any obvious patterns. Where do Cork people migrate? Where do people come to Cork from? Why?
Optional Mount the stories as an exhibition.
Part 2: The Innisfallen: Ship of emigration 1. Ask some students to find out if their grandparents (If they are available) had sailed on the Innisfallen (there were five different ships of the same name so find out when). Ask the students to record the conversation [Scaffolding: When they travelled? Why they travelled? Where did it leave from? Do they remember the journey? How long did it take? Where did it go to? Where were they going? Describe that place? What we the people like to them? Was it easy to get a job? What job did they do? Why and when did they return? 2. Ask some students to find out about the five Innisfallens? When they were built? Where they were built? Who built them? Are there pictures/videos of them? Use the further reading lists in the pack to get started. 3. The blueprint is of Innisfallen 2 which was sunk during World War 1. Ask some students to find out what happened? Visit the Irish Times archive (online and free) for newspaper reports of what happened. Visit the Cork City or County Library to read local newspapers. 4. Ask some students to draw/paint one of the Innisfallens if they have good art skills.
