The tribute accuses the New York Times of falsehood and defamation in its reporting of the death of Tomas MacCurtain, in which it was said it was ‘ “by persons... which are more Sinn Fein than the Sinn Fein” ‘. Fawsitt goes on to note that he has known MacCurtain for twenty years, and outlines his efforts as Lord Mayor to encourage the local newspapers to report Corporation meetings as spoken in Irish, and his other business achievements including the establishment of a clothing factory in Blackpool, Cork. Fawsitt also refers to the letter from MacCurtain dated 4 March 1920, ‘it is a letter that will be cherished by me through the remaining years of my life’.
