Scope and Content: Records of Diarmaid Fawsitt, Irish consul to the United States of America, New York, from 1919-1921. Correspondence by Fawsitt after his diplomatic period in New York confirms that he deposited all official papers of the offices in New York in the consular archive (ref. PR81/1/2/B/16). The contents of this collection therefore can be summarised as Fawsitt’s own duplicates, mainly typescript copies of letters, documents and financial accounts. Other known copies of this material are unknown. Significant items include the certificate of Fawsitt’s diplomatic appointment in New York, dated 18 July 1919 (ref. PR81/1/2/A/01), and copies of accounts received for various Irish Relief Funds (ref. PR81/1/2/F). Also present are items dating to the period immediately following Fawsitt’s return to Ireland around August and September 1921, including copies of outgoing correspondence from Fawsitt to Daniel J. McGrath, acting consul, New York (ref. PR81/1/2/B/10). As the content of these relate mainly to the consulate they have been grouped with the New York material.

Fawsitt (Diarmaid Fawsitt) to position of consul, New York, United States of America, issued by the Government of the Irish Republic. The booklet contains three certificates, one in French, one in Irish, and the third in English. Each certificate is signed by Arthur Griffith (Acting President) and Eamon de Valera, President of Dail Eireann, and issued ‘in virtue of the authority vested in me by Dail Eireann’.
