Scope and Content: Letter advising that the Provisional Government will revert shortly concerning any Irish government plans for the Oil Fuel Stations at Haulbowline, Berehaven and Rathmullan. The letter requests in the meantime that the British Admiralty do not enter any ‘definite negotiations...with private firms’ wishing to purchase the Oil Fuel Stations.

Scope and Content: File of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce containing papers of information regarding transatlantic telegraph cables. One item present includes reference to difficulties in establishing a cable ship base at Cobh, Co. Cork. Original file enclosure is present.

Scope and Content: Letter referring to the British Admiralty’s plans for the Oil Fuel Stations at Haulbowline, Berehaven and Rathmullan. The letter points out that the Anglo-Irish Treaty states that the fuel stations at Haulbowline and Rathmullan should be offered for sale to commercial properties, however, ‘their Lordships are however anxious to meet any reasonable wishes of the Provisional Government’. Meanwhile the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty specify that the British Admiralty will retain all rights in respect of facilities at Berehaven, Co. Cork.

Scope and Content: A letter from Diarmaid Fawsitt to the ‘Secretary’ (Gordon Campbell), concerning permission request for the Western Union Telegraph Company and the Commercial Cable Company of the USA to land telegraph cables at Waterville and Valentia, Co. Kerry. The letter refers to Article II of the constitution of the Irish Free State. Also attached is a memo from a Mr Deegan regarding same landing rights.

Scope and Content: Memorandum by Fawsitt recommending that the Minister of Industry and Commerce, under his responsibilities for marine affairs may wish to consider the matter of aquiring three oil fuel stations from the British Admiralty. The memorandum sets out that any such acquisition would be subject to the conditions specified in the annexe to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, namely ‘that purchasers shall maintain a certain minimum stock for Admiralty purposes’.

Scope and Content: Table of information, evidently prepared for the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, listing the names of owners of individual telegraph cables and wireless stations in Ireland. The table lists the owners of eight cables landing in Co. Kerry, and of three wireless stations at Clifden, Valentia, and Malin Head.

Scope and Content: Letter marked ‘confidential’ referring to the matter of the Oil Fuel Station at Haulbowline, Co. Cork. In the letter Fawsitt suggests to Dowdall that the oil fuel station should be purchased by the Cork Harbour Commissioners or by a private commercial company such as Dowdall & Company. Fawsitt requests that if agreeable Dowdall might write to the Irish Provisional Government to seek their permission to purchase the oil fuel station from the British Admiralty. Fawsitt also notes that there has been interest from the Cork Steam Packet Company in using the fuel station.
