Scope and Content: A report by Fawsitt on an initiative of the British Empire to promote a transport hub in Galway for incoming and outgoing trade between Great Britain and Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. In the report Fawsitt outlines his view that the initiative was purely an imperialistic matter that would benefit British rather than Irish interests. He goes on to say that any such development at Galway would hasten emigration from Ireland if it resulted in cheaper transatlantic sailings. Fawsitt also outlines his opinion that Cork harbour would suffer as any development in Galway might result in the withdrawal of transatlantic mail ships calling into Cork harbour at Cobh.

1. Letter dated 31 March 1922 drawing attention to article in the Cork Examiner (enclosed) of 29 March 1922 concerning inspection of the oil fuel tanks at Berehaven Co. Cork by a private buyer and requesting an update as to the British Admiralty’s plans for use or disposal of the oil fuel stations at Haulbowline, Berehaven and Rathmullan. (1 page, 5 copies). 2. Enclosed extract from the Cork Examiner dated 29 March 1922, from article titled ‘Berehaven Naval Base’. The article notes the visit of Mr Kneeshaw of the Anglo-American Oil Company to the naval base and his intentions to purchase the oil fuel station site on behalf of his company. (1 page, 6 copies).
