Paddle Steamer entering the Port of Cork, 1842. This painting by G.M.W. Atkinson shows a paddle steamer approaching the city where the north and south branches of the River Lee converge. Many ships, distinctive with their tall masts, line the quaysides. Steamships first came to Cork in early 19th century and were increasingly used as the century progressed. However, sailing ships remained important until the early 20th century. (© Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork)
