Merchant Princes
National Exhibition Letter, 1852. Inspired by the success of the 1851 Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace, London, a National Exhibition was held in Cork from June to September 1852. Nearly 130,000 attended the event which was organised to encourage industry and crafts in the aftermath of the Great Famine. Most of the main merchants were involved in the exhibition. Thomas Hewitt, member of a distilling family who was active in many aspects of Cork life, was on the Executive Committee. (CCCA U15B/P/A33 Hewitt Papers)
