1. 1824 Printed proposals for establishing in Cork City a general manufactory for the employment of 500 to 2000 poor children from 7 to 14 years, by Thomas L. Pain, formerly of England. Regards raising of capital, shareholders, book keeping, public subscriptions. (2pp)
2. 1824 Handbill, 'Employment of Poor Children To the Ladies and Gentlemen of the County of the City of Cork', regarding proposal from Thomas L.Pain for employment of poor children, investment in shares and loans, children to be clothed and maintained until 21 years old. (1p)

1. nd [?c1830s] MS. notice of 'Plan for the Employment of the Poor of the City of Cork'. Refers to governors of the house of industry to rent a lot of ground for term of not less that 21 years. Ground to be 'tilled by spade husbandry and manured by the sweeping of the streets', able bodied paupers to trench and reclaim and be paid in tickets for poorhouse meal, etc. (2pp) 2. nd[?c1835] Printed circular letter from Governors of the House of Industry, referring to 'general distress', and an increase of one-fourth in numbers of inmates to 922, mostly admitted 'at their own solicitation'. Funds are exhausted and the Governors have no means to support the establishment, '...many... inmates...would die rather than beg. Many are at advanced periods of life, many diseased...'. Necessity will compel them to apply for introduction of poor laws here. Appeals to Christian charity for donations. (2pp)
