Extent: 7 items Scope and Content: 1. 5 Feb 1836 MS. letter from John Osborne, Gibraltar, to 'My dear Richard', Cork. Describes his travels in Granada, Malaga and the Spanish countryside, etc. (6pp) 2. 7 Sep 1845 As above, Cambridge. Refers to commissioners appointed to make preliminary enquiries re. the colleges, help from Bishops Murphy and Crolly, including Murphy's library. Notes stinging commentary 'that the owners of mismanaged acres in Ireland should be looked on as the owners of slaves...'. Enquires re. Cork Water Works; etc. (4pp)

3. 14 Jul 1848 As above, Dublin, to 'Dear Uncle'. Tells of visit of Mr. Purser and trip to Germany and his financial position; etc. With stamp and seal. (2pp)

4. nd [1848-49] As above, Freiberg, Germany. Mentions quarrel between Isaac Johnson and uncle William and asks his opinion of the situation, various family matters, financial matters, etc. (4pp)

5. 2 Feb 1849 As above. Asks him to send money as soon as possible. Tells of his studies in the laboratory under Prof. Scheerer, and his social activities; etc. (2pp)

6. 12 Mar 1849 As above. Regards his financial position and family matters. Asks to be remembered to various people in Cork. (2pp)

7. 24 Jan 1850 As above, White Mill Cincinatti, c/o Att. Smith Esquire, USA, to 'My dear Richard'. Describes his surroundings and job as a book keeper to a large distillery. Comments on Ireland's State, 'Through ...many miseries have you passed [and] how many more...before you find your true and only resource to be in your steely perseverance in working out a charater + nationality for yourself...', etc. Does not approve of transatlantic packet station. Mentions fisheries, agricultural committee, botanic gardens, etc. Looks forward to new College. Speaks highly of Prof. Hincks. Mentions various family matters. Comments on Young Irelander activities in Cork, 'I never knew... how very far the Young Irelanders really intended to have gone and how near they were of having Cork in flames...'. etc. (6pp)
