Letters from Daniel O'Connell
Extent: 4 items Scope and Content:
1. 23 Apr 1836 MS. letter from Daniel O'Connell MP, London, to 'My dear Sir', Richard Dowden. Explains why he cannot carry out Dowden's request. Refers to Dowden as his 'good and esteemed friend', etc. (4pp) 2. 5 Sep 1843 As above, Merrion Square, Dublin, to Richard Dowden, Cork. He does advise anyone on the subject of registry of arms, but cannot object to tell what he shall do himself, which is to send in all his arms '...and have them registered and branded and I shall keep in that condition while I live as evidence of the silly and degrading insolence of British Domination...'. Quotes some verse:
"In Israel's Halls to tell the proud and fair / Amidst their mirth that slavery had been there...". He think it is a better plan than Dowden's and that 'The Repeal is nearer than you think...'. etc. (2pp)
3. 8 Aug 1844 As above, Richmond Bridewell, to 'My dear Friend', Richard Dowden, sending on the 3 autographs and commending him for his support of Repeal and his 'valuable service in this noblest struggle for fatherland...', etc. With copy of 1 autograph on cards. (4pp)
4. 28 Oct 1844 As above, Derrynane Abbey, Co. Kerry, to Richard Dowden. Enclosed strongest letter to Sir John [Easthope]. Expresses delight at Dowden's election as Mayor of Cork. (3pp)
