1. 23 Jul 1852 MS. letter from John Francis Maguire [MP], 12 Tichborne Street, Haymarket, London, to Alderman Richard Dowden, Sundays Well, Cork. Asks Dowden to represent him at the opening [of the Cork Exhibition], and to give his apologies to '...his lordship'. He has a '...notice in the books, to move that the Ministers Money Bill be read in three months hence, and until that is decided ... I cannot stir...'. (2pp plus envelope) 2. 28 Apr 1853 As above. Begs Dowden to inform the Council [of Cork Corporation], that he has invited a Mr.Wilson, Financial Secretary of the Treasury, in company with the city members, and the law agent of the corporation, in reference to the park. Mr. Wilson will transmit our memorial to the Lord Lieutenant who would bring it to the Lords of the Treasury. Refers to opposition to the Cork and Bandon extension railway, interference with Albert Quay. The municipal bill will be decided before a Lords committee soon. Most witnesses have been examined. Congratulates the Council and public of Cork '...upon the happy termination of a protracted and costly struggle [and] on the commencement of an era of usefulness for all classes of our fellow citizens'.
