Grattan, Lord French, McLoughlin, and Roche vice presidents. It is to dine on the anniversary of the Dungannon meeting, the declaration of independence in 82. Object is to forward the national cause. Subscription is 1 guinea per year. He hopes the club will pioneer the way for an assembly. Urges him to work for a Provincial College, etc. (3pp) 2. 16 Mar 1845 As above. The Committee of the '82 Club note Dowden's presence at the first dinner on 16 April is 'most important', and the toast they wish him to propose and speak to is 'The men who have rendered Ireland illustrious in science'. Suggests referring to Sir William Hamilton, Prof. Kane, McCullagh, Lloyd and Trinity College Dublin. Asks if Dowden has got his uniform yet, and refers to details such as collar, gifts, etc, 'The sight of a national uniform...will put heart into the people...', etc. (7pp)

MS. letter from Frederick Douglass, Limerick, to 'My Dear Sir', Richard Dowden, expressing thanks for the Dowden's hopitality and attention during his 'protracted' stay in Cork. Refers to being 'trampled reviled and maltreated by white people', taught to see them as his 'natural eminences'. He refers to Dowden's willingness to 'devote time, talent and official influence to the advancement of benevolent objects ', despite his 'many public cares and weighty responsibilities', as Mayor of Cork, and Miss Jenning's interest in his 'mission'. He has received 'the token of your esteem' which he wears on the little finger of his right hand, 'representative of the holy feelings with which you espoused and advocated my humble cause'.
