Poster promoting the anti-slavery cause, 'Slavery and Cruelty!!!.... A Petition to the House of Lords...in the Vestry of this Chapel...men and women against Slavery in our British [empire]....'. With extracts from the Jamaica Christian Record No.3 concerning the flogging of a female slave, Jane, of 22 years of age, for giving her owner Mr. Martin, 'a saucy answer'. Appeals to 'Britions! Scrapbook volume containing mainly newsclippings kept by Richard Dowden and also some material [kept by his wife, daughter or other relative] after his death on 5 Aug 1861. Newsclippings come from the Cork Constitution, Cork Examiner Daily Express, Southern Reporter and concern various topics, including Eglinton Lunatic Asylum, temperance, public monument for Father Mathew, Blind Asylum, Cork Literary and Scientific Society, the British Association, Botany, School of Design, architecture of Cork, education, Cork Fever Hospital, elections, liberal party, poor law, baking trade, death of Richard Dowden. Also copy of MS. letter from Dowden and others [of the Literary and Scientific Society], to Justice Willes, making him honorary vice president, 6 Oct 1860.
