Level: series Extent: 275 items Scope and Content: Large series consisting of volumes documenting Company operations and transactions, grouped into four major categories: financial accounting (eg, journals, ledgers, cash books); Operational Accounting (movement of goods and customer accounts); Salaries and Wages; and Other (including important early Company correspondence and volumes not fitting in other categories). These volumes are key records of the Company's activities, including its accounting procedures, its trade and dealings with customers, and its payments to its staff. The wages records document the names of many employees, making them useful for family history research. Among the 'Other' volumes is an important set of letters to ships' captains, 1844-71, a calendar of which forms an appendix to the descriptive list. There are also some Rents volumes for Company property (see Property files above: U370/C/001-007). Given the large scope of this series, it has been found useful, within the four main groupings, to group similar items, as indicated below. The 'Scope and Content' description of the first few items in each 'sub-group' provides further information on the records concerned. U370/F/001-131 Financial Accounting, 1871-1969. Present are key accounting records such as journals (1884-1936, items 1-14) and ledgers (1872-1936, items 15-38), and many cash books. These include cash books documenting payments and receipts, customs cash books (and related customs records, items 69-90), and freight cash books. Other financial volumes include general statement books (1922-34, items 113-17), recapitulation sheets (1871-1917, items 118-20), and trading volumes (sailings, gross earnings, and disbursements in respect of various vessels). U370/F/132-189 Operations (movement of goods, customer accounts), 1916-66. Included are records on the inward and outward movement of goods, and related transfers (1916-60, items 132- 40) and office records of goods for individual sailings ('Paid Ons', 'Porter's Outstandings', 1920-57, items 141-60). There are also records of debits, abatements and claims in respect of damage/loss
