Great Southern Railways, file
Level: file Extent: [c300 items] Scope and Content:
Large file in several parts regarding legal and other dealings between the Company and the Great Southern Railways Company Limited. The first part present is a small sub-file regarding a Ports and Harbours Tribunal Inquiry regarding Through Rates for Goods. The second sub-file regards the setting up by the Minister for Industry of a Tribunal to deal with arrangement for transfer of goods between Britain and Ireland (1928-29). The third sub-file contains legal correspondence with Ronan & Son Ltd, solicitors, regarding a case between the Company (respondent) and the Great Southern and Western Railway Company (applicant), regarding rates (1912-28). The fourth sub-file present contains a draft of an agreement reached by the two companies in 1937, in the context of the City of Cork Steam Packet Company’s merger with B&I Co Ltd. Most of the remainder of the file contains legal documentation regarding the case between the Company and Great Southern Railways, in the Court of Railway and Canal Commissioners (c1922) and the Railway Tribunal (from 1924). Most of this material is from the years 1922-30, although there are extracts referring to rates in 1880 and 1881. All of the material present is related as being concerned with disputes and discussions between the two companies as competitors for cross-channel trade from Cork, and the contemporaneous development of a Railway Tribunal by the Irish Free State to handle such disputes. One of the points at issue is the claim that the railway company is giving preferential rates to other ports, to the detriment of Cork Port and the Cork Steam Packet Company.
