Freight and Weighbridge Books, 1913-28; 1974-89

Freight and Weighbridge Books, 1913-28, 1974-89. Records relating to movement of goods (mainly barley) in and out of JHB, and weighing of crop on delivery. Present is one freight book and three files documenting the use of rail transport to deliver the crop from growers. There is also an AGS sack record book, noting the movement of barley sacks used in transporting AGS barley. The greater part of this sub-section, however, is made up of weighbridge books. These are based on figures taken when barley is delivered to the gates of JHB malting houses. They record account number, name, weighbridge number, net weight, grits, weight of each variety of barley, and totals. See also B609/2/H below, in particular items 18 to 26.

B609/2/F/1 Freight Book, 1913 to 1928. This documents the movement of goods inwards and outwards of JHB. Most of the goods, in and out, are barley, oats, seed, and related sacks, although hardware and equipment is also included. There is also much movement of flax seed to Ulster. Transport is mainly by rail. [See also B609/3/D/1 below]

B609/2/F/2 Rail, 1966. File of railway sheets; these record date, name of grower, quantities, amount for malting and for export, total tonnage, and costs.

B609/2/F/3 Rail, 1967. Includes railway sheets, as above, and sheets regarding transport of Farrell’s barley, from Youghal, by CIE. The file also includes Credit Payment Undertakings signed by growers agreeing to pay stated price for seed barley and fertiliser, and to meet freight and cartage costs [see section B609/2/A above].

B609/2/F/4 CIE Invoices, 1962-67. Large file of CIE invoices and JHB remittances and debit orders in respect of rail and lorry transport costs.

B609/2/F/5 Guinness Sack Records Book, May 1960 to August 1967. Log, by date, of movement of sacks.

B609/2/F/6 Hunter Village Harvest 1973, Carriage of Malting Barley. Sheets detailing carriage of Hunter barley for malting to JHB’s Village malthouse for the 1973 season. Broken down by contract number and contractor/grower,
