for 1965. A letter of 8 July concerns a proposed visit to Ballinacurra and to the Cereal Station by Mr Uhiara, who is on the brewing staff at AGS (Nigeria) Ltd.

B609/1/A/50 Letters from AGS, July 1966 to June 1967. A letter of 22 June 1967 concerns licence-plating of trucks transporting barley to railways, under arrangement with CIE. An item of the same date lists JHB growers participating in the Malting Barley Survey by the Agricultural Institute. A letter of 8 June forwards a receipt for a cheque for £16,259 in respect of seed sales. A letter of 20 January encloses a letter to T O’Sullivan, Director, Cereal Station, Ballinacurra, regarding arrangements for producing Foundation Hunter seed for this year. A letter of 18 January concerns deductions to be made from prices payable to growers and to be paid to the Irish Sugar Beet Growers’ Association and the National Farmers’ Association [see also letter 28 August 1967, next file]. A letter of 16 November 1966 gives germination results of Autumn JHB seed samples. In a letter of 12 September, Keith Pickering, AGS, Park Royal Brewery, London, thanks Mrs West for her hospitality on his recent visit. A letter of 16 August gives instructions for the drying, storage, and sampling of seed barley. A letter of 7 July from DR Tristram thanks Mrs West for her arrangements for the visit of the ECB Barley Committee, and especially for taking ‘so much trouble over the ladies’. B609/1/A/51 Letters from AGS, July 1967 to July 1968. A letter of 18 July gives the quarterly balance to the credit of JHB at 30 June 1968. A letter of 17 June informs JHB that from this year inspections of stock will not be carried out by DoA officials: ‘We should therefore like you to pay particular attention to carrying out your own inspections’. In a letter of 19 February regarding seed prices, DR Tristram writes ‘I feel that it must be rather bad publicity for us always to be selling seed at a high price, because I am sure that the farmers think that we make a lot of money out of it’. In a letter of 5 February it is commented ‘everyone seems to agree about getting rid of Proctor from the 1969 crop onwards’. A letter of 10 January informs JHB that this year’s Agricultural Instructors’ Conference has been cancelled as a precaution against foot and mouth disease. A letter of 21 September 1967 thanks Mrs West for her condolences on the death of the earl of Iveagh. B609/1/A/52 Letters from AGS, August 1968 to July 1969. A letter of 1 April 1969 encloses a circular outlining a new arrangement whereby Foundation seed will only be grown at Ballinacurra, and stock seed grown at four locations only: Athy, New Ross, Louth, and Ballinacurra. A letter of 12 February forwards the Foundation seed allocation list for Spring 1969, giving names of purchasing maltsters and barley buyers. A memorandum of 1 January informs of new Directors’ Responsibilities. A letter of 31 December 1968 asks for cultivation data for one of the prize-winning growers in this year’s barley competition. This is to help provide ‘a comprehensive picture showing the best farming practice in the country’. Present is a copy of a letter of 7 November to Deasy & Co, Clonakilty, regarding their intention to discontinue as buyers
