document discussion of complaints by Egan’s of Tullamore regarding the quality of Hunter foundation seed supplied to them by JHB. A letter of 6 April from JW O’Callaghan, AGS, Railway Street, Cork, to Mrs West, concerns an application for a contract by a Donal Sweeney of Killeagh, Co Cork. Many letters from February relate to distribution of foundation seed. A letter of 23 January invites Mrs West and Mr Tobin to the Agricultural Instructor’s Conference on 17 February. Another letter of the same date forwards an application for contract received via JHB’s Tralee agents, John Fitzgerald & Son Ltd. A letter of 28 November concerns the purchase by AGS and Phillips-Duphar of Chemical Services Ltd, who will now supply dressing for all AGS barley, as well as other agricultural and veterinary chemicals. Present undated [c20 November] is a partially completed barley competition judging form, in which a Timothy O’Sullivan of Courtmacsharry is named as a winner. Diarmuid Guinness, Knockmaroon, Castleknock, Co Dublin, to Mrs West, thanking her for hospitality on a recent visit, and sending best wishes from his parents. A letter of 23 March is from Miss FC Redmond, Editor, The Harp, thanking Mrs West for facilitating the Harp’s photographer during a recent visit to the maltings. There are several letters from March regarding investigations into the effects of growing barley on the same land for a considerable number of years. A letter of 18 February from JC Robinson, Deputy Secretary, AGS, asks JHB for the number of permanent full-time staff and employees of the company ‘for the records of our Parent Company’. A letter of 5 January approves the supply to Beamish & Crawford and JJ Murphy (Brewers) of the full amounts of seed requested. A letter of 30 December 1964 asks Mrs West to host two junior brewers training with AGS for a night. A letter of 2 December makes an addition to the list of companies of which WM Hutton, brewer-in-charge, Malt Dept, is a director. B609/1/A/48 Letters from AGS, 1 July 1964 to 30 June 1965. A letter of 21 May 1965 from MJ Atherton, Malt Dept, to Mrs West, concerns commission rates for malt for Irish Ale Breweries (IAB). A letter of 14 April is from B609/1/A/49 Letters from AGS, July 1965 to June 1966. A letter of 27 June 1966 encloses a ‘who’s who’ list of possible overseas visitors to the EBC Barley Committee Meetings in Dublin, Cork, and Kerry. A programme is also enclosed. A letter of 22 April concerns preparation of malt for shipment by Irish Malt Exports (IME) to the Highland Distilleries. A letter of 6 January asks that growers be advised to grow Hunter rather than Proctor barley this season, owing to the latter’s malting inferiority and lower extract. A letter of 30 December 1965 encloses a distribution list for foundation seed for Spring 1966. In a letter of 17 November, PJ Hogan, AGS Malt Laboratory, thanks Mrs West for her hospitality on his recent visit to Ballinacurra. A letter of 26 October informs JHB that after this year Boreham Warrior barley will no longer be used as an approved malting variety. A letter of 21 September forwards an analysis of malt for Cherry’s Brewery, Waterford. A letter of 26 August concerns the supply of Clonakilty barley by Deasy’s Ltd to Beamish & Crawford, and to JHB or AGS. Dated 14 July are the Malting Barley Instructions for Commission Houses
