Most relate to the Cereal Station and its work of propagation and experimentation, and to distribution of seed and related matters, such as export licenses. The large file has been arranged into 22 folders, each covering a year, usually from April to April, though later files run from June to June. B609/7/A/22 Proposals (agreements) by JHB to the Minister for Agriculture, regarding distribution of pedigree seed barley, oats, and spring wheat. The file is largely comprised of copies of the proposals, dated and signed on behalf of JHB, and with acceptance on behalf of the Minister also signified by signature and date. Present are proposals for distribution of pedigree seed barley, 1931-45, and 1950- 61. In the proposals, JHB agrees to a price in exchange for a stated quantity of seed, delivered at the Cereal Station, and agrees to stated conditions. The file also contains proposals for seed oats for 1931-32, 1937, and 1942, and a proposal for the Oats Drill Strip Experiment, 1950. Also present is a proposal for distribution of pedigree spring wheat, 1940.

Letters Received regarding the Cereal Station, and administrative correspondence, 1899 to 2004. The sub-section contains letters, mainly from the Department of Agriculture, regarding experimental work and general operations at the Cereal Station. Files regarding specific crops are placed at the start of the sub-section [B609/7/B/1-16], followed by more general, administrative files. Non-correspondence Cereal Station administrative records are placed in the next sub- section (B609/7/C). Remaining records regarding experimental work, mainly consisting of reports, tables, and printed matter, are placed in sub-section B609/7/D. These records overlap with records in the present sub-section, but are kept separate as they are not correspondence files, and relate more closely to the printed reports also placed in that sub-section. Reports and printed matter occurring on files in the present sub-section have been left in place. B609/7/B/1 Barley File, 1899-1927. File of general, statistical, and scientific information on barley growing in general, and JHB barley in particular. The file contains several subsections. 1. Barley cultivation, pedigree barley, soil, and deliveries. Consists of analyses, tabular data, and some letters, 1914-25. 2. Malting 1899-1968 (mainly to 1920), papers on meeting of commission maltsters, reports on malting and premises, barley experiments, and some figures. 3. Duplicates of matter sent to Mr Beaver, AGS, regarding his ‘145’ barley, as taken from DoA journals, 1912-15 (covering letter dated 7 March 1924). 4. Copy of article by John H Bennett,
