February 1927 to William Bowen, a prospective farm labourer, John H Bennett writes ‘my land is in several different places around the village, in some cases half a mile from the farmyard [at Charleston, Ballinacurra]’. Also present are a few letters from workers and job applicants; e.g., letter from and copies of references of Michael O’Sullivan, in application for a position as dairyman (November 1944). The file also contains some letters and notices regarding work and wage agreements made between trade unions and the Irish Maltsters’ Association [Regarding wage agreements, see also B609/4/E/12 above and B609/5/A/4 and sub-sections B609/5/D and B609/9/E below. Regarding some retired employees from the Company’s early years, see B609/5/E/1 below]. B609/5/A/4 ITGWU Correspondence, 1917-56. Correspondence with the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union, a trade union representing many JHB staff. Most letters are to or from the local branch, regarding disputes, hiring, general working conditions, special occurrences (e.g., special rates), and wage agreements. The first item is dated 17 December 1917 and is from T Murphy, District Secretary, Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Workers’ Union of Great Britain & Ireland, to JD Smyth, Manager, The Maltings, Ballinacurra, requesting a wage increase for union members, a list of whose names he attaches. Commencing May 1954, these are formal records of workplace accidents, one book for each malt house or store. However, only books numbered 1 to 3 contain entries. 4 and 5 have details on the front cover but no entries, and the remaining two items are blank.
