19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

The identity of Captain Daniel Flaven here is confirmed by his certificate number: 51.700. He previously served on Abraham Sutton’s Girl I Love and was captain of Sutton’s Nithsdale on the occasion of his Master Certificate application in 1860. Captain Garret (Gerald) L Walsh was the oldest master mariner son of Captain Jeremiah Walsh (b.1815, Dungarvan, Co Waterford) and a grandson of Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1794) in Clonakilty (see Garrett Walsh also in relation to the Cornhill ). Captain Timothy Donov an was Andrew Donovan’s young brother. Timothy and Andrew were both sons of Captain Tim (Thade) Donovan (b.1805, Kinsale) and Julia Dempsey of Kinsale. Captain Timothy Donovan ’s age differs between UK M&M and IMNCL, but his certificate number (19.513) confirms the two to be the same man. *IMNCL; CLIP (1865); UK M&M; Sutton Family History; O’Riordan, Portraiture of Cork Harbour Commissioners.

Another Cork ship of this name, captained by William White, was active between Liverpool and Australia at this time. However, that was a 610t Steamship and is not listed here. Captain Robert Sanderson Malone and Captain Garret Barry would have been the Captain R Malone and Captain G Barry in Lloyd’s. They had their Master Certificates issued at the Port of Cork in 1854 and were also associated with another Scott ship, the Swan (see same).
