19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Ship’s Cork Registration number (Reg: 13102) and date of 27 Jul 1848 were derived from CLIP Appropriation Book and UK M&M. Otherwise this ship’s information is slim. Captain Timothy (Thade) was previously Master of Acadia in coastal and North American trade. His oldest son, Andrew b.1834 (Kinsale), was married in April 1866 to Margaret Sutton, daughter of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty). Andrew went into business with his brother-in- law, George Sutton Jr (b.1836), as Sutton and Donovan Sailmakers of Cork and as a shipowner (see Black Diamond ). Apprentice and Mate Timothy was another son of Captain Timothy Donovan. Timothy Donovan (b.1839) would captain his first ship Pierre & Josephine of Cork 1860 – 1 and obtain his Master Certificate in 1862. Fate of ship:

On the 20 November 1865, this schooner was driven ashore and wrecked at Bridport, Dorset. Her crew were rescued. She was on a voyage from Cork to Bridport (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). This report is consistent with Black Diamond , Reg. 14118, having ‘lost cert. 22 January 1866’, annotated in the Shipping Appropriations Book (CLIP). Black Diamond was previously a Swansea boat, otherwise little information. Sutton & Donovan (George and Andrew) were the Cork sailmakers and shipowners (see Betsey) . George Sutton Junior, son of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty), was also a mariner, a chandler, a Cork City politician and a Cork Harbour Commissioner.
