1857 Austin Harley b.1842 (Cork)
This ship (Reg: 8484) was stranded and wrecked 24 December 1870 (Unseaworthy Ship Commission). Austin Harley (b.1842) was the captain; he and the crew were all saved (IMNCL). The Harleys and Scotts of Cork had links both through marriage and business; both are evident here as owners (see Darnley ). Captain Austin Harley obtained his Master Certificate in 1854, at which time he lived at 30 St Patrick’s Quay Cork. The widow of Captain Robert Sutton (b.1826/29, Kinsale), Mary Anne (Sexton) Sutton, kept a grocery store and spirit dealership at that same 30 Patrick’s Quay address (Guy’s Directory 1883). When Captain Austin Harley (b.1827) replaced his lost Master Certificate in 1862 he was captain of George Scott’s Steam Tug Pilot (Reg: 16272) and living in Queenstown (Appendix 6: Cork Steam Tugs). Captain John Griffiths sailed on Cork ships from 1849 until 1861, when he became the Master of this same Anne (Reg: 8484) of Cork. He listed his birth at various Welsh locales in IMNCL records but omitted a certificate number. While he became a ship captain in 1854, he obtained his Mate Certificate (Cert: 65.950) only in 1861. He mostly served on Harley/Scott vessels prior to the Anne . Mate (future Captain) David Manning served on Cork ships from 1842 onward and would later captain another Harley ship of the same name. Mate John Johns would earn his Master Certificate in 1860. *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s ; UK M&M; Guy’s City and County of Cork Directory, 1883.
