19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Mate (future Captain) Nathaniel Sutton was the son of Captain Robert Sutton (b.1826/29, Kinsale) and the grandson of Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1794, Clonakilty). Nathaniel Sutton (b.1855) later (in 1881) served as Mate on the steam ship Varna under Captain Denis Driscoll, (b.1838, Kinsale) who married his sister, Anna Sutton. All three are listed in their capacities as Captain, Mate and Captain’s wife on the ship Varna at Penarth Roads in the 1881 Wales Census. Captain Jeremiah Clancy was Master of Kosmopoliet when a ship that he owned, the White Eagle , was wrecked at Penarth in 1881 and a Captain Patrick Collins (b.1832, Kinsale) and all the crew lost their lives.

James Harley’s ownership of Lady Sale commenced in 1864. James Harley and James Bogan were associated through their ownership of the Henry M Hine of Cork. Captain William Bogan (b.1838, Cork) was previously captain of Hemisphere Borealis of Cork 1859 – 63 and earned his Master Certificate in 1868. Captain Daniel Maloney was identified as Captain in IMNCL reports by the certificate number 85.037 on his 1875 UK M&M application. Mate Timothy Buckley (b.1830, Crosshaven) would later be captain of Waft . Mate Thomas Foley sailed on Cork ships and would next be Captain on James Bogan’s Henry M Hine 1872 – 4, followed by Mate on Island Queen at the end of 1874. He earned his Master Certificate at the Port of Cork in 1874 when he gave his address as Warren Place, Cork.
