Apprentice: Fate of ship:

On the 28 May 1877, this brig was driven ashore and wrecked at Nash’s Point, Glamorgan. She was on a voyage from Cork to Newport, Monmouthshire (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). This ship sailed on Cork to Canada and America trade routes. Captain John Spillane was confirmed by matching certificate numbers on UK M&M and IMNCL records. Captain Austin Harley lost his shipping papers off Wilmington Delaware in 1863 due to confiscation by a US vessel. Suggestive of blockade-running during the American Civil War (see the Mary and the John Harley for Mate Robert Sutton ’s involvement in a similar event).

Additional information:

Two Austin Harleys here (master and apprentice/seaman); they mostly served on Harley and Scott ships.

Seaman Patrick Buckley was previously a seaman for over four years on the Jane & Mary Anne . He earned his Second Mate Certificate in 1858 and Only Mate Certificate in 1859.

CLIP documents continued ownership of John Harley by Edward Scott in the 1870s.
