John Peddar Phipps was a successful yacht designer. Two of his very well-regarded yachts, Zephyr and the 44t Medina , were built in Passage West and were successful in regattas in 1834 and 1836 (O’Mahony). The merchant princes of Cork, like their English counterparts, enjoyed fine racing yachts during the nineteenth century (see the schooner yacht Urania ). Captain George M Wheatley Atkinson, who was previously Mate on the James Fitzpatrick of Cork, documented West Indies and American trade as Captain in the 1830s. Seaman David Murphy (b.1817, Queenstown) later captained the Dominica of Cork 1847 – 60. #UK Nat Arch BT120; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; O’Mahony, Maritime Gateway to Cork.
