Fate of ship:

Moved to the Port of Cardiff in 1851 in Mediterranean trade (Lloyd’s). On the 5 January 1852 she foundered in the Mediterranean Sea, sixty nautical miles off Malta. Her crew was rescued by the Queen of Scotland. James Carmichael was on a voyage from Cagliari, Sardinia to London (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). Pictou is in Nova Scotia, just south of Prince Edward Island in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Captain Thomas Sutton was the second oldest of five Clonakilty master mariner brothers. Captain Thomas Walsh was a brother to Captain Jeremiah Walsh (b.1815, Dungarvan) who married to Catherine Sutton, daughter of Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1794, Clonakilty) (see also Isadore ). Mate John McCarthy(b.1810, Kinsale) would be Mate on Abraham Sutton’s Herbert 1839 – 41 before becoming Captain of the Jane & Mary Anne 1841 – 50, which had previously been captained by Abraham Sutton. Mate Patrick Richard Hayes (b.1830, Dungarvan) despite his youth substituted for his father as captain in 1849, due to illness and indicated that the owner of James Carmichael had been Captain Hill RN. He obtained his Master Certificate in 1862 (UK M&M papers).
