19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

1880 Cornelius Colllins b.1855 (Cork)*

Fate of ship:

‘She left Cork on 19 Mar 1881 for Newcastle -on-Tyne with a cargo of limestone. She was well found as a coasting vessel. Through an error on the Captain’s part, he mistook the Would Lightship for the Hasbro’ Lightship, and the James A Harley struck upon th e Hasbro’ Sands and ultimately became a total wreck. A formal investigation determined that the captain wasn’t working from an up -to- date chart’ (O’Riordan). Documented voyage routes included Madeira-Brazil-West Indies and Madeira-Portugal-Spain-Morocco. This ship (Reg: 52.554 on CLIP) was indicated to have had a name and owner change in 1878 from George & John Yourdi , explaining her apparent short Cork life (see the George & John Yourdi ). Captain Jeremiah Collins was the last captain of record. We know that he survived the following event since he took part in the Upnor incident in 1922 (see Victory ). Mate Cornelius Collins was the Boatswain under Captain Jeremiah Collins (and a younger brother). He would later in the 1880s emigrate to Boston. *IMNCL; CLIP; UK M&M; Rachel Wheeler and Collins Family History; O’Riordan, Portraiture of Cork Harbour Commissioners.
