19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Seaman:

1858 – 60 John Driscoll b.1839 (Clonakilty)

Fate of ship:

Thomas Murray’s voyage report for the first half of 1881 ends: ‘April 14th Clonakilty. April 15th Kinsale under ice up to 1st July’. The owner in later years, and up until 1883, was Thomas Murray of Ring, Clonakilty (CLIP; IMNCL record for 1878). Captain Thomas Murray would have been the Captain T Murray in Lloyd’s, as Captain Timothy Murray (b.1830) died in 1857 on the Bessie Bent . There was at least one older generation of Murray mariners and/or shipowners. Captain Thomas Murray took breaks from coasting on Hebe in 1877 and 1886 to go deep sea fishing on his 18t fishing boat Ariel . Mate (and Captain) Denis Murray was a co-owner and captain of Thomas & Ann and purchased the 94t Tamar Queen in 1864. He lived in Courtmacsherry and he likewise spent time deep sea fishing on his 24t Mhyrr and 24t Harry in the 1870s. These Murrays and John Driscoll of Clonakilty were also associated on the Murray ships Maryanne and Thomas and Anne . Mate Cornelius Kirby next served on Anderida of Youghal under Captain Timothy McCarthy (b.1837, Ring, Clonakilty), who was related to the Murrays. The Murrays were believed to have owned other ships: Catherine, Tamar Queen and Harry Herbert (Kingston) The 112t schooner Harry Herbert , built in Rhyl in 1860, sailed out of Liverpool, even after being purchased by Denis Murray of Courtmacsherry in 1887. *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton Family History; Kingston, A short history of Dararra and Ring.
