Additional information:

This ship sailed on the West Indies route.

‘The largest of the vessels that I have traced so far that appears to have been constantly employed on the West Indian route, was the barque Hebe , 549 tons, built in 1847, and owned by McMullen’s’ (Anderson). Other Cork West India merchants were Joseph Wheeler, Joshua Carroll, Morgan & Reeves, Large & Adams, Knight & Co., Bickerton and Simeon Hardy & Sons ( ibid ) (see also Glanmire ). Captain William Henry Deave Hargrave who apprenticed on the 316t Pallas in 1843, became Master of Pallas in 1847 before assuming captaincy of this 549t barque in 1849. Mate Joshua Hargrave (b.1829, Ballynoe) served on other Cork ships and earned his Master Certificate in 1853. An older Hargrave, Joshua Hargrave, was managing director of Messrs. J Hargave & Sons (Corn, Clover & Seed Merchants) , 1 Warren ’ s Place. He was also a Trustee of the Cork Shipowners Society, Secretary of the Royal Cork Yacht Club and a Cork Harbour Commissioner 1828-42. Captain Joseph Young was likely to be the same man as the Captain J Young in Lloyd’s. He previously served as Mate on X arifa and Simeon Hardy (two other West Indiamen) before becoming the Master of Pallas 1849 – 56.
