19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Captain Denis Reardon is documented here as master on this Sutton ship and would next master the Sutton’s Garland for several years. He had served his apprenticeship 1832 – 7 on William Brown under Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty). Captains Florence McCarthy and John Sutton knew each other well. They passed their Master Certificate of Competency exams in Cork on 24 April 1854 and were assigned consecutive Master Certificate numbers (10.270 and 10.271). Captain William Barry was previously Captain of the Sutton ship Garland . Captain John Sutton, born 24 th June 1834 (Kinsale) and the second son of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty) had not yet reached his twentieth birthday at the time of his Master Certificate examination in April 1854; hence taking the liberty of making a minor adjustment to his birth year on his application! He was married to Anne Baggott at St Finbarr’s 20 March 1854. He became a proprietor of the Cork Steam Tug Co. in the 1860s, captained the steam tug Brunnell and moved from River View (Summerhill) Cork to Queenstown in the 1870s. Captain John Sutton was buried in the Baggott grave at St Joseph’s cemetery in 1894. Little is known about his family.
