19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

There was more than one Hannah . Crew placement was made based on dates, tonnage and family associations, while Daniel Twohig and Denis Driscoll gave the ship number (Reg: 8354). These families would all have known each other. Captain John Twohig (b.1804, Kinsale) has 1806 as his birth year on a BT112 report, but 1804 on a UK M&M report; he was the father of Mate Daniel Twohig b.1834. Captains John Dempsey (b.1809, Kinsale) and William Dempsey (b.1809, Kinsale) had a one month’s difference in birthdates and were therefore likely to have been cousins (UK M&M). Captain Thomas Long was likely to have been the Captain T Long in Lloyd’s. Captain John Stamp sailed extensively on ships out of Kinsale and, after his lengthy service on Hannah, would captain Royal Standard 1865 – 70. Captain Robert Fowler was documented as the Captain of Hosford’s Hannah , by his certificate number (Cert: 8353) on IMNCL. Seaman and future Captain, Denis Driscoll would marry Anne Sutton (b.1857, Cork), daughter of Captain Robert Sutton (b.1826/29, Kinsale), in 1880 (see Amaranth ). Seaman William Sutton clearly by dates, sailed on this Kinsale-associated vessel and did not serve on the Sutton family’s Hannah . *IMNCL; #UK Nat Arch BT120/5 BT112; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton Family History.
