Mate:

1845 Robert Nicholls b.1824 (Fermoy) 1846 – 7 William Shea b.1824 (Cork)

Fate of ship:

The sloop Eliza Taylor of Cork struck Hore Rock off Ballygeary (Wexford) on 7 Apr 1850 and sank in four fathoms. She was en route from Liverpool to Youghal with salt. The Captain, Philip McDonnell, and crew came ashore in their jolly boat. I believe the captain was more likely to have been Captain Philip McDaniel (Appendix 6: Salt). Captain Timothy McCarthy’s dates slightly at odds with Lloyd’s shipping data (probably an innocent error). Captain Charles Fortune was from Wexford, the predominant county of the Irish Fortunes. Lloyd’s Captain W Barry would most logically be William Barry b.1810 in Passage West, however, that is not consistent with his UK M&M record. Captain William Shea would also captain A Sutton’s Elisha Thayer 1864 – 8. Lloyd’s; UK M&M; O’Connor Family Tree; Anderson, Sailing Ships of Ireland; Bourke, Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast.
