MS. letter from Tadhg Barry, Gloucester Prison, to 'A Liam, a chara', Liam de
Róiste, Cork. Level:
Item
Extent: Part of:
4pp plus envelope
U271/G/010/D
Scope and Content: He is 'in want of news of your doings', as he is not receiving answers to his letters. Refers to the 'Fermoy Committee' dissatisfied with de Róiste's absence. 'I shall be completely at sea if ever I get home things are so changed'. He is tired of prison experiences, but the most he can wish for is to be home in time for a trip to Ballingeary. He is again trying to finish an Irish education under McGuiness and Bob Brennan. Refers to difficulty with English and Irish grammar. Refers to the Cork Examiner making 'one or two flickering attempts to move with the times....when are we going to have a paper in Cork. He saw Lord Mayor O'Connors meeting calling for their release. Asks about 'all our relatives' (prisoners' relatives). Asks if he had any talk with Talbot Crosbie, and asks about Fred (possibly Fred Murray), Ban Óg Ní Bhrian. 'Did they ever think that we two would turn out as successors of Wm. O'Brien in the leadership of the Irish People (God help us all). Asks over the 'senior member' who 'owes me a letter'. He believes 'the Hue and Cry is off those who missed being arrested with us. Here we are in prison 9 months and they are having 'summer holidays' all the time'. Asks what happened to 'the money' and refers to their betrayed trust in (Bishop) Coholan. Asks 'When is the revision?' and hopes the June elections will be as great a success as the December one. Refers to Kanturk Guardians holding a mastership competition exam, the Sinn Féin Guardians in Cork doing the 'wrong thing'. Asks about Tobin. McEntee is asking over copies of his friend's poem about the Jutland battle. He does not expect to be let our for months yet. This prison is no better except that 'it has no tragic memories and we have more company'. Asks about De Róiste’s activities, also Sean O Tuama, Con Donovan, Jennings, Paddy Meade and Jerry Lane.
