Scope and Content: 1. 16 Sep 1915. Thanks him for the honour of the invitation to the meeting at city hall. Church duties will prevent him from attending. He is glad to show his sympathy with the Irish language movement and his appreciation of the work of the Cork branch of the Gaelic League in the city and in the summer school in Ballingeary. (1p)
2. 3 Apr 1916 Enclosed cheque for £2 for the Ballingeary scholarship fund. Wishes the college success. (1p)
3. 23 Sep 1916 Printed acknowledgement of receipt of congratulations on his appointment as Bishop of Cork. (1 item)
4. 7 Dec 1917 to 'My dear Liam'. He delayed writing as he wanted to communicate with General Doran and the County Inspector of Police. General Doran told him he has no authority over the Police. He had an interview with County Inspector Clayton who gives a bad account of the conduct of the boys in connection with the Hardwick Street business. Asks whether the members of the Sinn Féin Irish club suffered for the acts of some members of the Brian Boru Band. Refers to 'fusillades of stones on the police...shots fired from the rooms...'. The inspector is confident that the visit of De Valera will pass off peacefully and would have no difficulty with no armed police during the day time, but not at night time. He told the inspector that Sinn Féin would see to it that good order was observed Sunday night. The inspector has no fear from Sinn Féin or the Volunteers, the source of the trouble 'are the irresponsible boys and girls'. He will 'ask the priests to appeal to the people in the Churches on Sunday to observe calm and good order'. (4pp) 5. 12 Nov 1918. He does not see eye to eye with de Róiste on 'this money question'. It 'was collected for a specific purpose', but 10% '...is being used for a different purpose: for the maintenance of the imprisoned and deported Sinn Féiners'. The money should not be so used and the country should have resisted the deportations, as it resisted conscription. A special fund for the purpose of maintaining dependents should be inaugurated. Suggests that '...a hostile critic would say that the country is with the Government in shutting up in
