Scope and Content: Letter referring to events in Cork including the I.R.A. seizure of Professor Alfred O’Rahilly’s pamphlet, taken at point of a revolver during a meeting of the Farmers’ Union. The letter also refers to the I.R.A. seizure of a petition being signed in Cork: ‘evidently it dawned on them that the people want the Treaty’. The writer states the public are for the treaty but the Lord Mayor is not: ‘I am awfully disappointed with Domnall Og (Donal O’Callaghan)’. Other events mentioned include a Sinn Fein meeting of Cork city chaired by Sean Nolan with four for the treaty and four plus the chairman against. A post-script refers to rumours: ‘it is also said that the raid on west Cork mails recently was to get hold of Michael Collins letters’.

Scope and Content: Personal letter marked ‘private’, stating the sender was looking out for Fawsitt and twice in the office. Refers also to looking after a Mr Crowley who is ‘badly shook’. Very little political content however one opinon made is: ‘even if there is a big split it will do some good’.

Scope and Content: Typescript statement or short article written by Fawsitt from a position in favour of Dail Eireann approving the Anglo-Irish treaty. The paper presents Fawsitt’s view of the treaty from a legal and international perspective. Topics outlined include the political character of the July 1921 armistice, the powers of the plenipotentiaries, and the peace treaty as a compromise. Fawsitt argues: ‘the Treaty between Great Britain and Ireland signed in London on December 6th 1921, bears on its face all the evidences of compromise’.

Scope and Content: Typescript report or summary of agreement reached between pro-treaty TDs and anti-treaty TDs following a meeting on 4 January 1922 at deputy Sean T. O’Kelly’s home. This agreement proposes the president, Eamon de Valera, abstain from voting against the treaty. Also present is a summary of adjournments of Dail Eireann and discussions between anti-Treaty TDs and the president who rejected the agreement. These latter notes cover the dates 5 and 6 of January 1922. Meetings held in attempt to prevent split in party and preserve de Valera’s position as president. Anti-Treaty TDs at meeting: Sean T. O’Kelly, Liam Mellows, P. Ruttledge, Art O’Connor, and Sean Moylan. Pro-Treaty TDs at meeting: P. Hogan, J McGuinness, M. Hayes, and Eoin O’Duffy.

Scope and Content: Telegram urging the TDs of County Wexford to ratify the Anglo-Irish treaty in Dail Eireann. The sender urges: ‘the best interest of the county and the country demand the ratification of the Treaty’. Scope and Content: 1. Envelope, marked urgent, addressed to J.L. Fawsitt, Gresham Hotel, Dublin, or in his absence, Mr Michael Collins TD. (1 envelope) 2. Letter unsigned, in hand of Professor Alfred O’Rahilly, University College Cork, sending Fawsitt a template of pamphlet that he wishes published in Dublin. The template reads: ‘Freedom of Speech Vindicated. Prof. O’Rahilly’s Pamphlet. The Case for the Treaty’. (2 pages)

Scope and Content: Letter addressed ‘my dear Fawsitt’ regarding status of printing work Fawsitt is undertaking on behalf of Professor O’Rahilly. The letter also includes a copy of a letter or note from George Crosbie dated 3 January 1922, stating that he has received warning not to publish anything from O’Rahilly. O’Rahilly informs Fawsitt that he has already lost £50 as a result of suppression of his pamphlet, and five meetings were dispersed by force. Lists of signatures of those in favour of the treaty has been taken by ‘armed raiders’. Expresses disappointment that AG and MC (Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins) have not intervened with force militarily. Ends with question: ‘Am I dreaming or is it a fact that on Jan 6th, Friday, N. Ireland is automatically included in the Free State?’.
