Title:

Irish Relief Funds, Accounts of the Irish-Consul, New York, of sums received for humanitarian relief in Ireland

Scope and Content: 1. ‘An Acknowledgment’ of sums received by the Irish consul in New York for the purposes of Irish relief during the war of independence. The article sets out Fawsitt’s position that the sums received be at his ‘discretion in the advancement of the best interests of the Republic of Ireland’. The article includes a list of names and sums of contributions received. 2. ‘Irish Republican Prisoners Dependent Fund’, notes receipt of $5,253.98 in 6 months previous, with list of donors. 3. Damaged. ‘Funds Sent to Ireland...By Consul...’. Lists sums of $15,214, including $2,000 for the Irish White Cross Fund per Messrs De Lisser and P.L. Ryan. 4. Handwritten draft of letters as above, with blank spaces left for sums of money.

Scope and Content: Copies of account sheets of sums received from American subscriptions raised for the relief of the people of Ireland during the war of independence with Great Britain. Accounts referred to include the Irish White Cross Fund, Tralee Relief Fund, and Cork Relief Fund. A small number of funds mention money raised for specific individual cases including relief of republican prisoners. A cheque book and account book detailing sums received for these funds at the office of the Irish Consul-General, New York, are also present (ref. PR81/1/2/F/21-22).

Scope and Content: Fragile. Letter or memo from Dr F.P.McCarthy, Professor Bacteriology, Tufts Medical and Dental School, Boston, Massachusetts, to President de Valera. The letter sets an outline for organisation of a medical unit for ‘Irish Relief purposes’. In addressing de Valera the writer is careful to emphasise the non-political motivation of his letter: ‘The failure of the Red Cross to go to Ireland prompts our action. We are approaching our proposed activity from purely humanitarian standpoints’. Also mentioned is a target objective of raising $25,000 by 15 December, by method of public appeal.

Scope and Content: An instruction for setting up or establishing an Irish relief organisation in the Boston area of the United States. The instructions include reflection on the ‘high mortality amoung (sic) the children’. The aim of the unit is ‘for the immediate relief of the suffering people of Ireland’.
