Diarmaid Fawsitt’s Pocket, Daily, and Weekly Diaries

Extent: 47 items

series

Scope and Content: Series of diaries kept by Diarmaid L. Fawsitt from 1920 to 1966. The diary for the year 1926 is not present. The diaries are in a number of a different formats. The early years are Collins Compact Diaries, or pocket diaries, with a maximum of six lines per day and five to six words per line. As such the early diaries are brief in content, and primarily concerned with appointment times, telephone numbers, and travel arrangements. Later years include daily and weekly diaries with some additional levels of detail. In spite of this the majority of entries across the series would be notes of appointments or anniversaries rather than full journal or detailed accounts of daily events. Whilst most of the diaries in the series are complete, the diary for 1922 contains entries only for January to May 1922, representing a substantial gap in a critical period during the civil war. In addition to recording Fawsitt’s appointments a number of diaries also include cash entries. These include costs associated with Fawsitt’s travel around the United States with Eamon de Valera (ref. PR81/1/7/01) and income associated with his tobacco shop in College Green, Dublin (ref. PR81/1/7/05). Also present is a single diary or address book for the year 1954 belonging to Diarmaid Fawsitt’s son Ronan Fawsitt (ref. PR81/1/7/35).
