Letter from Mary M Slattery to Mr JL Fawsitt, Stillorgan, Co Dublin
(Copy) letter from (Fawsitt), Ministry of Economic Affairs, to the Secretary, Gaelic League

item
Scope and Content: Letter from Fawsitt to the Secretary of the Gaelic League, stating that he has ‘at last’ heard from Mrs Slattery, who thinks the Depot could be purchased for about £1,000. Fawsitt advises that this does not seem a reasonable figure, and suggests £3,000, to be paid over an agreed number of years. He further advises that it be agreed that the name of the Gaelic league is not to be used under the new management. If this offer is not entertained, he would advise that sale as previously contemplated be proceeded with forthwith.
Scope and Content: Letter from Slattery to Fawsitt, apologising for giving him ‘so much trouble’ and explaining that in her last letter, the £1000 stated did not include the amount in bank, which she took for granted would go to the Gaelic League. Seeing the present valuation, she does not wish to be considered a prospective buyer. She refers to Father York in San Francisco having stated in his paper that ‘they had about 57 varieties west of the Mississippi’, and that there are more than 57 ‘varieties’ in New York. She adds her view that ‘the Irish were never more hostile to one another’, and suggests it may be best if the purchaser ‘is not particularly interested in the movement’.

item
Scope and Content: (Copy) letter from Fawsitt to Slattery, acknowledging her two letters of 12 May and stating ‘I am rather disappointed’ at the figure of £1000 suggested by her. He explains that he has advised the Gaelic League that £3000 is the most they might expect, and that they might agree to payment over a number of years. He offers to use his influence on her behalf ‘if you can see your way to bid anything near this figure’.

Scope and Content: (Copy) letter from Fawsitt to Slattery acknowledging hers of 27 June, and sending, for her information, a copy of his to the Secretary of the Gaelic League of today’s date. In this letter, Fawsitt quotes from Slattery’s letter of 27 June, and advises that he assumes Mrs Slattery would be agreeable to paying £2000 for clear possession, stock, and bank credit. He suggests the League send a cablegram directly to Mrs Slattery, if this is acceptable.

Letter from (Fawsitt), Ministry of Economic Affairs, to Secretary, Gaelic League
Extent: 2pp
Scope and Content: (Copy) letter from Fawsitt to the Secretary of the Gaelic League, reporting that he met Mrs Slattery in New York recently who informed him of her intention to resign as manageress of the Irish Industries Depot. He explains that last year he was in contact with the previous secretary regarding proposed sale of the store to Mrs Slattery. He takes it nothing came of this, and notes he may be able to interest a New York friend to make a bid, if the Committee of the League still wish to dispose of their interest. 2 copies of letter present
item
Scope and Content: Lettr from Fawsitt to ‘O Muirthuile), Secretary, Gaelic League, acknowledging his of 13 June, and stating that, while ‘I do not like giving even the appearance of interfering with what is not my business’, he would advise against the League sending a representative to New York especially to dispose of the Store. Fawsitt thinks the Irish Consul is well placed to assist in this matter. He outlines the ‘modest’ nature of the Store, the difficult present trading conditions, and the difficulty of securing a buyer. He recommends that the business be offered to the present manageress for £1000 down and three annual payments of £500.
