Level:
Extent: 2 pages (2 copies)
item
Scope and Content: Important record of face to face meeting between Fawsitt and President de Valera in relation to Fawsitt’s terms for reinstatement to the civil service. At length Fawsitt and de Valera discuss Fawsitt’s terms but the meeting ends with Fawsitt unable to accept the position. The main issue is the date for pension calculations. The president states he cannot open this case and not expect other returning civil servants to then seek the same. Also referred to is the breaking of their friendship following Fawsitt’s acceptance of the Anglo-Irish treaty. The President also remarks on the fact Fawsitt is a difficult man to work with, based upon comments from Ernest Blythe following Blythe’s return from the USA in 1921. He also outlines that members of the cabinet considered Fawsitt was seeking to dictate terms of reinstatement. If Fawsitt returns to the civil service he may find people making life difficult for him, evidenced by the interventions of Judge Wylie (William Evelyn Wylie).
