Crowley Hisses Mention of Free State Gathering’. Refers to two reports of two rival meetings, one held by Clan-na-Gael and Cumann na m-Ban at the Hotel Astor, and the other at the Lexington Theatre where $10,000 was raised for ‘the unrecognized Irish Republic’.

Scope and Content: A cutting of an article titled ‘Irish body would impeach Cohalan. Condemn Birkenhead and raise fund of $30,000’. The article refers to a meeting of Clan-na-Gael at the Lexington Theatre, where a ‘De Valera protest meeting’ passed a resolution in favour of impeaching Justice Cohalan for his participation in the Irish Free State election campaign and also demanding the deportation of Lord Birkenhead.

Scope and Content: A short news article reporting the death of Laurence Ginnell, titled: ‘Laurence Ginnell, De Valera Envoy, Dies in Washington’. The article refers to Ginnell’s unsuccessful attempt to gain possession of the office maintained ‘here’ by the Irish Free State. A manuscript note at the foot of the article remarks: ‘another enemy of the Irish people gone’. Possibly in the hand of Fawsitt’s American ally, James K. McGuire.

The report refers to a trap set by handing a false publication to a suspected spy working in the Irish government, subsquenty released and the spy apprehended. The name of the spy is not printed. Also present is an article referring to the election campaign which reports on a demonstration in College Green, Dublin, in support of the Cumann na nGaedheal candidates for Dublin.

Scope and Content: Formal letter informing Fawsitt that per agreement with the Executive Council his appointment to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is terminated. The date of termination to be three months, i.e. 21 November 1923 and in the meantime he is to take ‘leave of absence’. The letter requests that he hand the Secretary all official papers in his possession and any official keys.

Scope and Content: Contains news report of article titled: ‘Spy Trapped. Bogus Document Lands to Capture. Official’s Treachery. Irregulars Deceived by Fake Letter’. The article is in respect of an unidentified spy, accused of leaking a document from the Colonial Office to the Governor-General dated 19 July regarding proposed Registration of Shipping Bill. The document was leaked to the ‘Belfast News-Letter’ on 10 August.
