Scope and Content: Detailed letter written by Fawsitt in response to McGrath’s letter of 19 June 1923 requesting an explanation for Fawsitt’s ‘unauthorised activities’ during a recent trip to the United States of America. Fawsitt defends his activities by stating that all of the items in the Whelehan report excepting one were in relation to Ministry of Industry and Commerce business. The exception being his handling of the discussions concerning future US investment in Haulbowline dockyard, Co. Cork. Fawsitt argues he has not exceeded his duties. Further he states that in relation to Lindsay Crawford’s report ‘I find no charge against me therein’. He believes Crawford’s report has the same origin or authorship as the article in the Gaelic American, i.e. parties connected with the split in the Irish-American lobby between those for and against the policies of Eamon de Valera.

Scope and Content: Letter referring to fact that copy of the Crawford report has been certified a true copy by Mr Fitzgerald (Desmond Fitzgerald, Minister of External Affairs). Also present is a memo of telephone conversation from Fawsitt to Murray requesting date of Crawford report. Copy does not bear date.

Scope and Content: Letter requesting missing date from the copy received of Lindsay Crawford’s report on Fawsitt’s recent visit to the United States of America. A manuscript memo on the letter notes that on 2 July Fawsitt received a phone call from Mr Murray referring to fact that report bears no date but that a covering letter from Mr Crawford is dated 1 June 1923. Murray remarks that report is ‘locked away in Mr Fitzgerald’s private desk’ (Desmond Fitzgerald, Minister for External Affairs).
